Friends[]

Heather Chandler[]

Chandler seemed to have more respect for McNamara than Heather Duke, and treated her better, doing things such as giving her rides to school. McNamara seemed to have cared about Chandler even after her death, as she objects to Duke taking Chandler's scrunchie when they're cleaning out her locker before Never Shut Up Again.

Heather Duke[]

Duke and McNamara's relationship is complicated. In the song "Beautiful", McNamara suggests Duke see a doctor about her bulimia, showing she has a little more sympathy for Duke than Chandler does. However, throughout the rest of the play, McNamara continues to ignore Duke and disregard Chandler's abuse against her. In Act 2, "Shine a Light (Reprise)" McNamara's suicidal thoughts take form as Duke other classmates, signifying that McNamara is now scared of Duke and the power she holds.

Veronica Sawyer[]

Veronica is arguably McNamara’s closest friend. They aren’t particularly close for most of Act 1, but during “Never Shut Up Again”, some productions include Heather McNamara comforting Veronica while Duke, Kurt, and Ram talk about the ‘swordfight in her mouth’. In Act 2, McNamara attempts suicide after she is laughed at for opening up about her problems. However, Veronica stops her from overdosing. They talk and McNamara hugs Veronica, thanking her for coming after her. McNamara and Veronica are later seen playing croquet together, it can be assumed that they had gotten closer since McNamara’s attempt. After “I Am Damaged”, Veronica returns to school, where she is greeted by McNamara, who expresses deep concern for Veronica, cupping her cheek and telling her that people had said she committed suicide. In “Seventeen(Reprise)”, Veronica reaches her arm out to McNamara, inviting her to join Veronica. McNamara hesitantly accepts Veronica’s hand, and the two of them hug, signifying the start of a real friendship, away from a highschool hierarchy.
